Mithya By Devdutt Pattnaik, A book review

Mithya starts out to be what it expects to be. A collection of short stories from Hinduism. Many of which you may have heard and many that you many not have heard.

For example

Very less is written and said about Bhrama, the hindu god who created the universe, why so?

The Story of Sati, the wife of Sita

The Barat Of Shiva

Many many more such stories. Some of the stories are contradicting amongst themselfs, but that is the whole nature of Mythology I guess.

I found this to be a very enjoyable short read. I will recommend this book to you. I am pretty sure there will be a couple of stories in it that you might not have heard

Lasik experience

I just had my Lasik operation and I wanted to put in some afterthoughts on it .

I have been wearing glasses for 18 years now. For those who are wondering about my  age  I am 25. I have been wearing my glasses from 1993.I had a high power ..I am not too sure on the specification it was some -5 and -6 each eye.

There was so much I missed out on, Playing cricket , my glasses would get steamy after a bath, boxing, horse riding, becoming an astronaut  or a cowboy.

But on the other side my specks saved me a lot too, I once had got into this fight which was totally not my fault (It never is) The only reason I walked out was because they too pity on me and me specks. Sad but true, not that I do not appreciate it.

I had got so used to them that ,I remember this one particular dream in which I had lost my specks and I was looking for them. I mean damn….that was dreadful.

Anyway, I  finally have got my Lasik done. I had this done at Shroff eyecenter in Delhi.

Please find the website here http://www.shroffeyecentre.com/

The phone number I will list out to all of you lazy people

So this is Delhi and the Country code is +91  then 011 and then the number.

So all those who are curious as to how this happens here is how

Step 1

Retina Test.

A week before the operation you have to undergo a retina test. This is to find out if you are a good candidate for the Operation.

So what I get from the doctors is that the size of the retina should be big  enough.Normally people have a good retina size but in many cases the retina is small. The few things which makes the retina small or not a good candidate is Contact lens.

I am told by the doctor that contact lens should be avoided as far as possible. They tend to damage the retina. While wearing them and pulling them off they may cause damage to retina.

Ok don’t take my word for it but talk to the doctor  after reading this.

I have never wore contact lens in my life. I think it is for girls and Sharukh Khan who wants to change the color of his eyes after killing some one (Baazigar)

The tests are one  hour long which involve a test for color blindness, retina photography,Optimetry and what not

One test in particular where the doctor looks at your retina by focussing your eye in a direction. I was pretty impressed by that. The light is actually in your eyes but you do not feel the brightness.

This gives a very accurate picture of your retina.

I may be wrong with my optical terms here. The only word I know is retina  and I am very liberal in using it.

As mention earlier I was the perfect candidate, I always am, may be I should apply for a position of a guinea pig in some research lab or something, I might have a bright future there.

So what the perfect candidate means in this terms is that, The effects of this operation will have the best effect on it.The side effects will be minimal. The side effects are dry eyes and  low resistance to bright light  These are temporary effects and last from a few days to a few weeks. These are to be minimum in my case. And the operation effects will last for a long time  and it is very possible that I may not get  reading glasses in older age. (Gonna be 18 till I die) But I will wear them just as to look intellectual and while I am at it I will paint my hair white.

The only person I can think of with white hair and reading glasses is Karan Thapar right now.

Also Manmohan Singh and Lal Krishna Advani.

Mannu has a Turban and very little hair ( I am assuming) and Lal Krishna Advani has NO hair, So Karan Thapar it is.

NO offence is Mannu or the Khalsa community, and Lal Krishana Advani. I have very dense hair (Ghaney mulayam kaley bal, khiley khiley Matwaley  bal, Dabur amla kesh tel ka kamal)

And more over I like this chap for his aggressiveness and ruthlessness.

Where were we….O yes… the congress govt is sucking the country dry, No wait….O yes Lasik.

Step 2 The Operation

The whole procedure is about 15 mins. Before the operation is too begin, you will under go one final retina test just to confirm that you are still a good candidate. This means do not get into a fight or wear contact lens.
There is never a good time to get into a fight but if you can avoid it  then sure do.

Now the operation, There was an endless lines of  eye drops being poured into my eyes, But they are very safe and they are inted to turn your eye numb.

Next was the operating table, it was nice and warm. lie with your face facing up and have second thoughts….What is that weird looking thing over there.?

I was shit scared now and for no particular reason, I tend to get scared at times.

Now I am posting the  video of the operation …this is not my lasik operation but of some dude I found on youtube….

Viewer discretion advised. Esp females.
They cut off a slight layer over the retina (the Black part) and then focus the laser on the black part, corona is it called?

Now the question  you all are thinking is does it hurt, after having got it done I would say no…it does not…it is a little uncomfortable, lot of pressure on your face, but no  it does not hurt. Your vision goes blind for a second when cutting off  the retina, that is probably because the shaver is in the way. The doctor was nice to tell me what she was doing and how it was going. It was very reassuring. The whole process is machine operated  (I think,  and the Shroff  guys have been doing this for some time now.) With in no time my first eye was over. And then the second eye.

For rest please see the video. I was scared to shit the whole time and was praying like hell. Well I am saying, is that I have only one pair of eyes and what if the worst happened? How will I check out girls then ?

Step 3 NUMBER NEXT

After the surgery is over you are made to wait for 10 mins . The doctor descrubs  (is that a word?) and another round of  eyedrops and then you are taken for testing.

Now you are made to read the eye chart.

Now I had not expected that my eyes will recover so soon. I could read all the alphabets. Though they were a bit Hazy , but that was because of the eyedrops.

18 years I have been wearing them and now I am free.

Yiypee….

A few words of precation, No head bath for a week, No swimming for a month and then I am good for the rest of my life.

For those who think that the operation is a bit too graphic then please go  for iLasik. I am told that it is blade free walk in and walk out. It is a bit expensive.

The normally Lasik costs Rs. 40,000 ($888.8888)

but iLasik costs Rs.90,000 ($2000) ASD or USD @ $1 =Rs 45

iLasik is blade free and is accepted in miltary and other rough and tough professions, Kick boxing, Karate and Quake 3

A video of iLasik (blade free)

Step 4 How do I feel

I feel great, though it will take about a days to loose the haziness in the eye but I can see clearly. I feel so weird with out my glasses right now. I can wear goggles and chase girls. The Goggles companies have one more customer to target. I can now shave a lot better, Move my eyeballs not having to move my head. I have 180 degrees vision Woo hoo.Now I can get into a bar fight , go hunting, look into a microscope, swimming, diving , bungee jumping, base jumping, horse riding, fighting crime  etc………..woo hoo!!!. A complete change in life style. Though I have a complete belief that  Money is needed for a complete change in life style but now I have the option …..I better buy me some lottery tickets.

Step 5 Medication

Dry eyes persist and you need to wear goggles as you cannot tolerate bright light for a few days. They will get better. I will keep you posted.Do not rub your eye for the first one week and you are good to go.

So all in all its a 15 min walk in and a walk you thing. If you have any question then please leave them in the comments section I will answer them.

More Salt than Pepper by Karan Thaper, A Book Review

More Salt than Pepper

An enjoyable read into the life of a journalist.
I happen to be a great admirer of Karan Thaper, I had read one of his earlier books, The Sunday sentiments.
This book followes in the same lines as the previous one.
It follows around the personal life of Karan Thaper and how screwed up a interviews with prominent personalities like Amma for instance and he recollects some fun facts of the interviews. Not too personal not too political
A delightful quick read.
